Mind-Body Connection and Cancer: What Does It Mean?Mind-Body Connection and Cancer: What Does It Mean? From the office of Dr. Laurence Magne The concept of the Mind-Body Connection is very simple: the things that go through our minds have a profound effect on our body. It almost defies intelligence that this connection is denied by anyone, but it is. Of course, the main reason for denying its existence is that its very hard to make a profit off of it. This, sadly, is one of the main reasons that you havent heard more about the Mind-Body Connection and cancer. In a very simplistic example, lets examine an extremely common example of the Mind-Body Connection in everyday life. Most people have had the experience of calling in sick from work, when they arent really sick. Many people need to give a reason for calling in sick, so they say they are sick to their stomach or have a headache. A good number of these people then end up sick to their stomach or developing a headache. As we think, so we become. This happens even when we dont mean to become what were thinking about. This happens especially when were only thinking about it to avoid becoming it. Pay attention to how frequently we are bombarded by images and fear about cancer. Its hard to open a newspaper or watch the news without seeing something related to cancer. Its terminal, untreatable, and can strike anyone down at any time. Or so we are taught to believe. This is an example of the way the Mind-Body Connection and cancer work together in a negative way. If youve been diagnosed with cancer, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to explore the Mind-Body Connection. Doing so requires that you take control of your thoughts. Many people erringly believe that they are in control of their thoughts, when they have actually, unintentionally, turned a lot of their thinking over to the media. The first step is to eradicate fear and worry, both of which have been shown to have an incredibly toxic effect on the immune system. These two thinking traits actually have almost no positive effects over time. Fear is a positive trait when the house is on fire, as it motivates us to get out and save the lives of ourselves and loved ones. Taken into consideration over time, however, chronic fear lowers our ability to combat disease and effectively deal with life. Sadly, both of these traits can easily increase after being diagnosed with cancer. To begin utilizing the positive relationship between the Mind-Body Connection and cancer, work on eliminating fear and worry from your life. Acknowledge the fact that your mind exerts more control over your body than your doctor does. Practice healthy and positive meditation and visualization to begin leading your body back to its natural state: health. There are a limited number of things in life that we actually have control over. The attempt to exert control over those things that are actually beyond our control leads to fear and worry. This is another example of the way that we have been conditioned to letting the Mind-Body Connection have a negative impact on us: were too frequently told that we dont have control over our own health. Weve turned that over to the doctors and the medical industry, because they are better equipped to keep us healthy. This is simply untrue. Accepting that you have control and that nature has supplied you with all of the tools necessary to be healthy is empowering and begins to automatically increase health. The relationship between the Mind-Body Connection and cancer can be truly miraculous. Our body is capable of destroyed cancer and does so regularly. It is only when our body fails to destroy cancer that we become aware of its existence. It is only because weve lost touch with the power of our Mind-Body Connection that this ever happens in the first place. By restoring that power, we can easily relegate cancer to the list of conditions that was once a problem for humanity, but no longer is. About the Author What is meditation?
Meditation usually refers to a state in which the body is consciously
relaxed and the mind is allowed to become calm and focused. Several major
religions include ritual meditation; however, meditation itself need not
be a religious or spiritual activity. Most of the more popular systems of
meditation are of Eastern origin, though there exists also various forms
of Christian, Jewish and Muslim meditation.
