Writing from Experience

As a teacher of creative writing and journalism, I have discovered that so many writers struggle initially with identifying the subject matter for their articles. I advise that it is important for writers to be able to carve their own niche and to be able to write with confidence as an expert, although many writers find this difficult to imagine. Their concerns are that they may not have the relevant qualifications in any particular field so how can they write about it?

I believe that people become qualified to write just by living their day to day lives and learning from the events which occur all around them. The new writer just has to tap into these experiences and look at them from a writers perspective. Every writers perspective is going to be different as well so coupled with the individuals own experiences, there is no reason why articles cannot be given a unique slant.

So how do writers initially tap into this almost unlimited source? I teach my own students to write a list of jobs which they have done in the past or may be currently still employed in.

As an example, I have listed some of the jobs which I have done over the years i.e.

Shop Assistant Office Clerk Nurse Counsellor Trainer Teacher

Once you have written your list, take each entry and write another list from that.

Teacher-creative writing, journalism, relaxation techniques, meditation

Then take one of those subjects again and expand on it

Creative writing- fiction-short stories, novellas, (Short stories) twist in the tale, ghost stories, crime stories, sci-fi, fantasy..

You can then take it even further.

Short Stories -Characterisation, beginnings, middles and endings, twist endings, dialogue, viewpoint..

I could also look at it from a teachers point of view such as:

Qualifying to teach First lesson Identifying students needs. Bridging the gap Gaining trust Dealing with difficult students Time management Writing lesson plans Inspiring students Constructive feedback

Work through the rest of the jobs in the same manner and soon you will have a complete list of fields in which you might be considered an expert. There are so many things that I could write about. I know the subject matter well and I do currently teach all of those subjects. I am up to date with current procedures and trends; just as important is that I am confident that I can write about the subjects in a knowledgeable manner.

Within the class environment, I have often had students who do not work but who stay at home with children. It is evident from talking to my own students that sometimes, those housewives and mothers do not feel qualified to write as an expert because they feel that they would not be taken seriously, but realistically, they have so much to offer as they have experienced so much. For example:

Mother-pregnancy, childbirth, parenting responsibilities, crying babies, feeding, clothes, coping with sleepless nights, bonding, becoming a family etc

Writers just need to think about what they do and then break each item down into sub-sections and from those sub-sections; the ideas should start to flow.

It is not difficult to generate ideas or become an expert in your own specialist field. Writers can also list hobbies as these can also become part of a writing niche. Writers once they have chosen their area of expertise, just need to start believing in themselves and get writing. This way, every experience in life could be used to further the writers career and help them to gain recognition.

What is meditation?

Meditation usually refers to a state in which the body is consciously relaxed and the mind is allowed to become calm and focused. Several major religions include ritual meditation; however, meditation itself need not be a religious or spiritual activity. Most of the more popular systems of meditation are of Eastern origin, though there exists also various forms of Christian, Jewish and Muslim meditation.
Meditation as a form of alternative medicine brings about mental calmness and physical relaxation by suspending the stream of thoughts that normally occupy the mind. Generally performed once or twice a day for approximately 20 minutes at a time, meditation is used to reduce stress, alter hormone levels, and elevate one's mood.
A discipline in which the mind is focused on a single point of reference. Employed since ancient times in various forms by all religions, the practice gained greater notice in the post war US as interest in Zen Buddhism rose. Meditation is now used by many nonreligious adherents as a method of stress reduction; known to lower levels of cortisol, a hormone released in response to stress. Enhances recuperation and improves the body’s resistance to disease.
Meditation is an easy and simple way to balance a person's physical, emotional, and mental states. It is easily learned and has been used as an aid in treating stress, anxiety, pain management, and as part of an overall treatment for other conditions including hypertension and heart disease. Research shows that meditation decreases the heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen consumption, and even decreases blood pressure.
