Do You Really Need Vitamins?

You have probably been lied to! Ill get right to the point. People lie to me every single day. As a cop, Ive been through countless interrogations and investigations and almost everybody lies. So what does this have to do with vitamins? I know how to cut through the bull and get to the truth.

The body needs vitamins and minerals. There, Ive said it but the conclusion may not be what you think it is. If you have a background in nutrition you will be asking what form of vitamins/minerals is this guy going to talk about.

You cannot skip eating your fruit and veggies and think you are going to get by just because you take your multiple vitamin. Yes vitamins/minerals are needed for biological processes such as growth, digestion, nervous system functioning, building blocks for other cells, etc.

In the past people were just fine eating whole foods and did not take vitamins/minerals. Whole foods are still the best source for your vitamins for a number of reasons. Whole foods contain a variety of micronutrients. Whole foods contain dietary fiber which helps prevent disease and manage constipation. Whole foods also contain phytochemicals which help protect against free radicals (these rascals cause big time cell damage).

Now for the bad news. Most of us do not eat enough vegetables and fruit so we are not receiving all of the nutrients we need. To make it even worse, the fruit and vegetables we eat today are not as nutritious as those that our grandparents ate. For the most part, the soil of our generation is depleted of minerals and trace elements. You can get around the depleted soil factor by eating organically grown fruit and vegetables. Not only will these have more antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals than the conventionally grown variety, you will also be avoiding the pesticides and herbicides.

I have found that most of the nutritional supplements you get over the counter are garbage (actually I wanted to use another word). Those of us who have fought in the nutritional trenches have heard more than one incident from the sewer man who can tell you of all the undigested vitamin pills recovered from the sewer, many of which still had the brand name clearly visible on the pill. Guess what? Those undigested vitamins did not do the buyer any good and were a complete waste of their hard earned money. That is another reason fruit and vegetables are better nutritionally, you can digest and absorb them .

Now dont get me wrong, Im not against taking nutritional supplements. I have actually found products that work. These products are made from organic whole foods so they actually contain the antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. These are the products that will be digested and absorbed by your body so you will feel the results of powerful nutrition.

What are vitamins?

an organic substance that acts as a coenzyme and/or regulator of metabolic processes. There are 13 known vitamins, most of which are present in foods or supplements; some are produced within the body. Vitamins are crucial for many bodily functions including a healthy immune response.
An essential low molecular weight organic compound required in trace amounts for normal growth and metabolic processes. They usually serve as components of coenzyme systems. For humans, vitamin A, the B series, C, D1 and D2, E and K are required. Deficiencies of one or more vitamins in the nutrient supply result in deficiency diseases.
